Shifting layers

Possible causes :

  1. XY axis misalignment
    - The Main issue with the Vertex
A step by step procedure to align the XY axis can be found [here]
  2. Stepper driver reference voltage set too low or too high
    - check if the stepper diver is set around 0.9v
As stated in the manual the correct voltage must be within 0.89 and 0.93V. An easy way to adjust the voltage can be found [here]
If the voltage is set too high the steppers may overheat and loose steps.
  3. Stepper driver overheating
    - check the reference voltage set and the temp of the driver
If the voltage is set too high the steppers may overheat and loose steps.
If the Voltage is correctly set (~0.9V) and the driver still is hot, glue a small heatsink on the chip and think about a fan ventilated case for the controller board.
  4. Belts too tight or axis not running free
    - check if the belts are too tight
This may choke the motor and make it loose steps
The belts should be bendable with light finger force.

    - check if the affected axis is moving freely along the whole way
Even with a well tuned printer, with time dirt and grease/oil make a sticky compound that can end up blocking briefly the axes. Clean and re-oil the XY rods on regular basis
